Rest Easy, My Little Brother

Philzone.org - Philzone Phansite Community Discussion Board: Other Stuff: Rest Easy, My Little Brother

By Roarshock (Roarshock) on Saturday, April 17, 2010 - 03:10 pm: Edit Post

I don't think anybody on this board knew him - he had been off the scene for decades - but my little brother certainly partied with the boys back in the day, and I have some Grateful Dead stories about him that will curl your hair.

Anyhow, my little brother died suddenly yesterday morning. He was 44. I'm all shocked and awed.

Wow... I'm so glad that somebody who knew Daniel has checked in here. Thank you. Yeah, the stories are being collected, and are moving from the extra-ordinary to the legendary.

Daniel had suffered the last several years from Hemochromatosis - a rare disorder that causes excess iron to accumulate in the body. He had seemed to be on the mend, but the disease had stressed his internal organs, and Friday morning his heart burst.

I am imagining that there was too much love in the heart of that big biker dude, and now it has spilled out as light and is everywhere. I am grateful that he is no longer in pain.

With love, laughter, and tears, we returned Daniel’s body to the earth on Earth Day. It was raining hard all morning, and raining still when we began. The cemetery was muddy, but the rain ended before the service concluded, and then the sun came out and it was a brilliant, sunny afternoon. In addition to myself, Chris, and my mom and dad, some of Chris’ relatives from the town turned out in the rain, including her nephew “Little” Ed, who is a guy as big as Daniel was! (And I sure felt Daniel’s weight when we carried his pine-box casket to the grave.) Then who should show up, but our dear friend of 30 years, Tom Phipps, who had driven 6 hours from Helena, Montana, to be present. At noon, the Juliaetta town whistle, normally blown at that time for 20 seconds, was let to wail for a full 2 minutes in honor of Dan – For me that was the moment of greatest emotion. We played a recording of Jerry Garcia singing “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic” and then remembered Daniel with stories. It was left to me to read the lines “On Death” from Kahlil Gibran’s “The Prophet.” – A passage that Daniel always read at the funerals of those that he loved. Then we lit off bottle rockets, and those who wished fired off Dan's shotgun. His wife Chris - who he had never been able to get to fire a gun - fired the last shot. After he was buried, we stopped in town at the Bottoms Up for a drink, and then back to Lewiston where my family and Phipps had many drinks in Daniel’s honor. Today is a new day, and we proceed in light and life.

Disco Stu - love the picture of your creek.

Funny thing, among many, I recalled Thursday was that 31 years ago, to the day, I took my little brother and drove down to San Jose to see what was the dawn of a new era for the Grateful Dead - Our fellow Contra Costan Brent Mydland's first show with the band. Well, this week marks - for me - yet another new era of the Grateful Dead (pun intended). The eras keep on piling up, and the river roll, roll, roll...

By Roarshock (Roarshock) on Sunday, April 25, 2010 - 09:35 am: Edit Post

On Death

You would know the secret of death.

But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?

The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.

If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.

For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;

And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.

Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.

Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.

Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king?

Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling?

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?

And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

-- Kahlil Gibran

Here's a poem I wrote on that long ago Earth Day, April 22, 1979... Following the epic, now legendary Grateful Dead show at Spartan Stadium. I had the great privilege, a couple of years ago, of reading this at the West Coast Zoner Jam.

Ode to the Dead

O, colors shifting, waves rippling

Wind blowing, rain falling

& music playing,

& playing, & playing.

First, tune up strum cords

Growing volume of sounds

Drums & piano & Always

Guitars. 3 guitars weaving

Together & jamming!

O, Music! O, Colors!

O, bright sun above!

Wine flowing, herbs burning

Faces contorting in streaming

Beaming ecstasy dreaming.

Living! O, living! Music singing!

Singing love songs, work

Songs, bad man’s songs, my

Songs & your songs,

Giving songs to People

Who grow happy &

Peaceful in the web.

Loving, moving, smoothly

Dancing. O, dancing!

Like waves of grain

Or wind, or sea

Ripples of human beings

Vibrant allowable moving

Consciousnesses expanding

Eyes sparkling, lips parting

Faces shinning. O, Life!

O, Dead, Defy the Dead

Proclaim the Living!

O, Dead the music singing!

Waves of music, waves of joy

Surround us. Abound within us.

Cool drops of water

Touch our skin. It looks like

Rain. It feels like Rain.

It must be Rain. O, Rain!

Feel the music, Feel the Rain!

The Dead

Proclaim the Living!

The Laughing. The Loving.

O, we are the Living. Dead

Proclaim the Living!

In music singing words

Poetry playing. O, Joy!

O, beauty, wind, rain, waves

& waves & waves of people

Sighing friends of common souls

Enemies of common foes

Anger freezes

Living, breathing

Feeling cool spring breezes.

O, Dead

Proclaim the Living!

Reading through all this again brought real tears to my eyes...

Looking at that creek picture more thoughtfully showed me all the undines active there, and some kind of 'Coon/Otter' Spirit living in that rock. It's the one with the bit of moss on it, and you can't help but see it grinning at you.

I know those woods Spirits say "If I knew the Way, i would take you Home."

Here’s a story for you. I started out as an arm-chair Dead Head - Attracted first by their name and their iconography, and then I got turned-on to the music through listening to albums. Then I heard them live on the radio. It being the Bay Area, there were numerous opportunities and invitations to go to shows, but I wasn’t into going to concerts in those days. Finally, on June 9, 1977, Fred Faloona said to me, “You’re going!” and off we went to Winterland. It was all over after that, and I have been seeing all the shows I can ever since.

I was so excited to see the Grateful Dead live again, and to share the experience. When they next played Winterland in December 1977, I grabbed Daniel (my little brother was all of 12 years old at the time) and we started off. We stopped at the home of our friend Dan James, because we wanted him to go with us. He was having some grief with his girlfriend, and by the time we gave up and went on without him, we were running very late.

When we arrived at Winterland the show was sold out. We were shut out. There were a dozen or so freaks hanging-out across from the venue (A dozen tops folks, imagine that! Of course this was years before Shakedown was invented), and one Scalper Dude, who was having no luck selling tickets at the outrageous price of $20 (face was $7.50).

We stood out there for a while, and collected visuals, and some great dialogue:

Scalper Dude: Who NEEDS a TICKET to SEE The DEAD?!

First Freak: Hey man, did you take any of that?

Second Freak: Take any of what?

First Freak: L S Crazy.

Second Freak: L S WHAT?! Hell no, that shit destroys chromosomes!

So that stayed with us forever, and Daniel and I often repeated the above dialogue to each other like catch-phrases. I am so going to miss hearing him boom “Who NEEDS a TICKET to SEE The DEAD?!” and “L S WHAT?!”

We did come back the next night and got in. Another “Thursday night at Winterland” and we were utterly thrilled. We went to many more shows after that and partied like kings.

He had dodged death many times, and he and his wife had discussed his final wishes, and we followed them to a tee.

Yeah - he got the funeral send-off he would have wanted.

It's a beautiful place up there in Juliaetta, Idaho. The family will be back next April 16 to mark the first year since his passing.

Here’s another Grateful Dead related Daniel story.

Since the first time I heard the Grateful Dead live was on New Year’s Eve via KSAN’s radio broadcast, I only went to a couple of their New Year’s Eve concerts. It was always expensive and a hassle to get tickets, so I mostly made it a tradition to go to all the shows of the run, but stay home New Year’s Eve and listen on the radio (the shows were always broadcast live on the radio).

So anyway, about 1984, the Dead are playing the SF Civic on NYE, I’m staying home, but Daniel and a posse of rambunctious louts are going to the show. I tell him that I’ll be listening on the radio, so wait for a quiet moment and yell “Martinez Party Animals!” as loud as you can (Our hometown is Martinez, California). Sure enough, midway through the First Set, there’s a quiet lull, and over the radio I can distinctly hear a voice hollering “Martinez Party Animals!” (Wasn’t just me, my wife heard it too, and if you listen carefully to the broadcast recordings, it’s there).

The next day, I see Daniel and say, “Daniel! We heard you last night! You yelled it!” And he replied, “No man. We were partying with this dude from Michigan. He had no idea where Martinez is, but was glad to yell ‘Martinez Party Animals’ just the same.”

So there you go… Be loud, party hearty, but if you can get some enthusiastic guy from out-of-town to yell for you, well why not? Helps prevent hoarseness.

That is awesome. I'm so glad for you that you have lots of memories to keep your brother with you always.

It’s about time to let this thread slip into the archive, which will be a comfortable place for it. I have begun a memorial page for Daniel over on Facebook, and have begun collecting stories, photographs, etc. If any of you are weird enough to have an account on there, and are interested, the name of the page is “Danimal” and if you search Facebook Groups in the category Common Interest – Friends, it should bring up a picture of Daniel’s mug. Any of you can always email me too, if ever so inclined.

Dear Zoners,

One more thing I want to say here – I was somewhat despondent, and had much drink on board several Saturday night’s ago when I started this thread. I fell asleep, and what a sheepish remembrance when I saw the thing again next morning, already with about thirty replies attached.

Anyhow, I was, and am, overwhelmed by the support and love that flowed from you all. I felt the concerned healing energy around me during that first rough week. Your kind remarks are a comfort to me, and to my family, and Daniel’s friends.

You have all re-affirmed why I am a Life Member of the Hippi Tribe, and a Dead Head, and why in particular, for many years now, I’ve been hanging out in the Phil Zone. Despite the difficult patches we have here in the Zone, there is love at its heart.

My Sincere Thanks.

Your Friend,
